ModRetro launches Tetris Battle Mode update on the Chromatic

If you didn’t know this — I didn’t — every ModRetro Chromatic handheld console comes with Tetris, and that’s been a thing since day one. Honestly, it’s pretty awesome that the console comes with a game already packaged.

But one of the really cool things that Chromatic offers is regular updates to games, even physical game cartridges. Through a unique update tool, you can actually update the firmware on the games you buy even if they’re physical cartridges, like the old-school GameBoy cartridges. Of course, that only works with the newer carts designed specifically for the Chromatic. Yes, you can play classic games, too, they just don’t get the same benefits.

Anyway, the reason I’m bringing it up is because ModRetro and Tetris have launched a new update that introduces Battle Mode. This new mode allows players to go head-to-head when using a link cable.

How does the Tetris Battle Mode update work? How much does it cost?

Since every Chromatic owner gets Tetris with the console, the update is free to everyone who owns it. And it’s all powered by ModRetro’s Cart Clinic, a tool that allows you to patch and update ModRetro cartridges right from your Chromatic.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Download the ModRetro Firmware Updater on your PC or Mac.
  2. Insert your Tetris Chromatic cartridge into the handheld.
  3. Connect your Chromatic to your computer via a USB cable.
  4. Launch the Updater tool and open the “Cart Clinic” tab.
  5. Click Check to check for an update and follow the prompts to install the Battle Mode update.

When it’s all done installing, disconnect your Chromatic from USB, find a friend and sync up with them using a link cable. That’s it! Now you can start battling it out.
