Backbone One Xbox Edition mobile and PC game controller

Backbone One launches new Xbox Edition

The Backbone One is an excellent mobile gaming controller that makes streaming and playing games on your mobile device so much better. Forget messing with touchscreen controls, you get the full experience of a physical controller, anywhere, anytime. You probably don’t need me to introduce you to the standard edition of the brand’s controllers. But you might be interested in hearing about the brand new Xbox Edition, available in a limited run.

Borrowing from the Xbox brand’s iconic colors and designs, the Backbone One Xbox Edition exudes a legendary style. Designed in close collaboration with the Xbox team, it has a translucent finish with a green tint. Compatible with the iPhone 15, iPhone 16 and select Android devices, you just pop your phone in and off you go exploring your favorite digital worlds.

It’s powered by your phone, requires no charging, and provides low-latency gaming. Plus, you can play on any screen, not just your phone. It’s also compatible with PC, Mac, and tablets, utilizing pass-through charging via USB-C. A built-in 3.5mm headset jack allows you to plug in a compatible headset for seamless voice chat or localized and immersive audio. That’s great if you’re playing in a communal space like a living room and you don’t want to bother anyone. Or, if you just want to hear the audio more clearly.

The Backbone App works with Xbox Cloud Gaming (Beta) to give you a console-like experience on any screen. Press the dedicated Xbox button to access the dashboard, navigate menus, jump into games or communicate with friends online.

Why would you want a Backbone controller?

While most of the features are self-explanatory, some may be wondering why you would want one of these. That’s especially true if you don’t usually game on your mobile devices or stream your games to other devices.

Even though I have a Steam Deck for portable play, sometimes it’s just more convenient to continue playing on a phone or tablet. That’s precisely where the Backbone comes in handy. You still get the console-quality controller experience but in a bite-sized version. Plus, the design of the Backbone means playing games on a phone is much more natural. You don’t have to do the awkward finger movements to tap, roll and pinch — physical buttons are much better.

At $110, it’s still pretty accessible even for a premium experience. Plus, the Xbox Edition comes with one month of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. The Backbone One Xbox Edition is exclusively available at Best Buy.
