Doom and DOOM II from Limited Run Games physical release contents

Limited Run Games is releasing DOOM + DOOM II physical with updates

By now, you know the classics DOOM and DOOM II. They’re often used as a benchmark for various devices, simply to see if they’ll run the games. The joke is that even a refrigerator or a smart watch can run DOOM. Of course, we’re long past the physical releases of these classic titles. While we’ve seen many, many digital re-releases and remasters, collectors don’t usually have much to work with. At least, that used to be the case. Limited Run Games will soon be releasing DOOM and DOOM II, as physical copies, with some warranted updates.

What are the DOOM and DOOM II physical editions?

Available on Xbox Series X|S, PS5 and Nintendo Switch, the new physical copies start at $30. You get the game disc or cartridge, plus a physical game case, a cover for it, and a booklet. These days, most new games don’t even come with a booklet, so that’s great.

There’s also a Big Box Edition for $100, which includes a cassette tape soundtrack, trading card park and, a collector’s Big Box with artwork. If you’re really feeling devilish, there’s a Will It Run Edition for $666 that includes everything previously mentioned, plus a Collector’s Edition box with a built-in screen and USB ports — you can even connect a controller and play DOOM on it. That edition also comes with a custom handheld Cacodemon game console, floating Cacodemon statue with a magnetic base and a Certificate of Authenticity. The two more expensive editions can also be purchased for PC, with a Steam code included.

Just to recap:

  • DOOM + DOOM II Standard Edition — $20
  • DOOM + DOOM II Big Box Edition — $100
  • DOOM + DOOM II Will It Run Edition — $666

What comes with the updated DOOM + DOOM II games?

As you’d expect, the games included in all editions come with the classic DOOM + DOOM II definitive releases. Plus, the following:

  • DOOM + DOOM II
  • TNT: Evilution
  • The Plutonia Experiment
  • Master Levels (DOOM II)
  • No Rest for the Living
  • Sigil & Sigil II
  • Legacy of Rust
  • A new deathmatch map pack with 25 maps

Legacy of Rust is interesting. It’s a new episode created through a collaboration between id Software, Nightdive Studios, and MachineGames. Yes, an entirely new episode in the DOOM universe. Pretty fucking rad.

Then, of course, some of the updates you can also experience include cross-platform deathmatch and co-op for up to 16 players. An in-game mod browser to install new mods and experiences. Plus, you can choose between the original midi DOOM and DOOM II soundtracks or a new, modern IDKFA version created by Andrew Hulshult — with brand new DOOM II recordings. You also get the KEX engine, BOOM source compatibility with more modern mods, accessibility options and translations for up to eight new languages.

Upgraded visuals, modern controller support, a weapon carousel for faster weapon swaps, gyroscopic aiming support, local split-screen deathmatch and co-op, featured community mods, 60 FPS support, native 16:9 support, restored in-game original music, quick save and quick load, and DeHacked mod support are already included, from previous releases.

Holy shit that’s a lot. Anyway, if you love the DOOM games, you need to check out this release. They go live on April 18 and will be available until May 18.
