I only had the chance to play Control for a couple hours last night, but already I can’t wait to dive in and power through more of it. Admittedly, I have no idea what the fuck is going on, but having watched several previews and reviews it seems that’s par for the course with this game.
I’m not saying the story is so terrible no one will get it, just that it’s fairly complex and has a lot of layers.
As for the gameplay, it’s your standard third-person run and gun style with various tele-powers for added effect. Right now I have the ability to pick up objects in the environment and fling them towards enemies. It’s great.
The performance is pretty much what you’d expect. I’m seeing stutters and frequent pauses especially during cutscenes. At least for me, it’s not enough to turn me off to the game but there are some out there who will want to wait for additional patches.
In any case, I’m having a blast so far and can’t wait to get back to it.
UPDATE: I finally finished it, and I do mean completely. There’s a moment where the credits roll and you’re like “what the fuck” but the game keeps going. Be sure to power through the rest of the game, because it’s well worth it.
All in all, Control is definitely worth playing at least once. It’s not done once the [true] credits roll either. There are still plenty of missions and additional content to experience.
The story is satisfying, if not a bit jarring. The gameplay is fantastic, and there are plenty of abilities, weapons and mods to unlock. Currently, there are some performance issues but they will likely be taken care of soon.
If you have the opportunity give the game a shot. (not sure how long the discount will last).
